Northern Virginia's history of vine cultivation is lengthy, with Thomas Jefferson famously holding the opinion that the state was capable of creating vintages on par with those in Europe. While this prediction took two centuries to come to pass, excellence has been achieved in local winemaking in the region surrounding Monticello in Charlottesville and in Northern Virginia. These regions are together known as “the Piedmont” and are home to the vast majority of the state’s wineries.

With the Potomac River serving as the border to the north and Shenandoah National Park as the border to the west, the scenic Northern Virginia winemaking region sits square in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A pioneering wine operation here was Linden Vineyards, which was established in 1983 and put the region on the map with a Bordeaux-style blended red and the signature Hardscrabble Chardonnay. An apprenticeship program started by owner Jim Law led to dozens of other wineries being founded throughout the region over the years.
